From Broadband Wireless Online: Forthcoming WiMAX technology will enable other entities besides large telcos to get into the telecom services business, according to an assessment by Detecon Inc.
That assessment is part of a new White Paper being offered by Detecon called "WiMAX: Overview and Outlook for the USA." An executive summary of the White Paper is available at http://www.deteconamericas.com/wi_max.shtml.
New entities that may elect to provide high-speed data, voice and video services using WiMAX technology include municipalities, power companies and various large conglomerates, such as Walmart, Federal Express and the U.S. Postal Service, according to the consulting firm.
Detecon predicts there will be less interest in WiMAX technology by the large wireline operators, especially those that don't see a market in serving customers located too far from the head-end or central office.
U.S. cellular operators will be likely to focus on mobility, rather than bandwidth. So Detecon predicts that mobile operators will prefer 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) technologies over WiMAX.
WiMAX may prove to have a role in future network convergence strategies. Detecon points to the potential use of WiMAX by direct broadcast satellite companies, which could use the technology to add high-speed data and voice services, in addition to video service.
Detecon cites the superior efficiency of WiMAX technology compared with other wireless technologies. For instance, WiMAX systems will have a theoretical spectrum efficiency of up to 7 bits/Hz/second. This efficiency could improve business operations for service providers in terms of managing and acquiring spectrum.
Finally, Detecon sees Intel's involvement with WiMAX as providing momentum for both investment and R&D that previously was lacking.
Detecon is a consulting firm specializing in the communications and IT industries. The company is owned by T-Systems International GmbH, a division of Deutsche Telekom. |
