Jerry Hodgen posted an excellent review of the 2005 Spring WiFi-VoWiFi conference and Expo in Baltimore, Maryland last week. Our own Ken DiPietro also attended the show and had positive remarks of his own.
Jerry writes:
I just returned from an eye-opening assembly of Wi-Fi visionaries,
engineers, and users this year. Where would that be? Well the answer is
obvious to anyone who has an interest in accessing data and telephony
systems in a completely untethered environment.
If you still haven't guessed, this assembly of great minds was at the
2005 Spring WiFi-VoWiFi conference and Expo (hosted by JupiterEvents, a
division of this site's parent company) at the beautiful inner harbor
area in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. Hats off to Ted Stevenson,
Executive Editor Wi-Fi Planet,
and Eric Griffith, Managing Editor, Wi-FiPlanet.com, for chairing and
moderating a very informative conference with a powerful agenda.
Wi-Fi Foundation
I got off to a good start by attending a couple of technical
workshops the day before the conference. Craig Mathias, Principal, of
the Farpoint Group
performed an outstanding job of bringing us all up to speed on wireless
networking, including current technologies, architectures and issues we
are facing today.
Since my experience in the modern world of communications started
with radio and radar many moons ago, I could easily identify with
Craig's dissertation and presentation. If you ever have a need to
design and implement a comprehensive Wi-Fi network, I am confident
Craig could certainly provide the technical data to point you in the
right direction or design the system for you if need be.
The Theme
The common thread of the conference was the pent up demand for
unwired access to the Internet across the nation and around the world.
Specifically, free and access to voice, business, and personal data any
place at any time whether it is in a public park in Philadelphia or a
cab in Singapore.
This theme played out time and time again in the three keynote
addresses during both conference days, as well as in an excellent panel
discussion moderated by Eric Griffith about the legal and legislative
battles regarding municipal Wi-Fi.
Agents of Change
It is important to note that Bill Gurley, Venture Capitalist from Benchmark Capital, and David Isenberg, Principal 'Prosultant, Isen.com,
set the stage for the conference during their keynote addresses on the
first day. As usual, David Isenberg was upfront, candid and spoke of
the folks in the communication carriers ivory towers. |
