Amended from The Charleston Gazette:

Transceiver antennas relay high-speed wireless Internet signals from transmitting towers to houses.

Verizon gradually has been adding DSLAMs in West Virginia, and, over the past three years, it has installed about 50 remote terminals here. This year, it plans to add about a dozen more, said spokesman Lee Gierczynski. “Newer technology is lowering the cost,” he said.

You don’t have to sit around and wait for Verizon, however.

Within the past few years, a handful of regional companies have sprung up offering “fixed wireless broadband” service, where the Internet signal is transmitted from a tower to antennas fixed on houses and businesses. If unobstructed (by trees or mountains, for example), the tower signal can reach anyone within a radius of about 20 miles.

At least three providers operate in West Virginia: Four Seasons of Bluefield, Va.; Micrologic of Buckhannon; and Sequelle in Parkersburg.

Fixed wireless broadband providers:

  • Four Seasons of Bluefield, Va., operates 36 transmitter towers covering more than 2,000 square miles throughout Southern West Virginia and northwestern Virginia. Maximum speeds range from 3 Mbps to 10 Mbps, depending on service plan. The installation price ranges from 0 to $100, depending on service plan, though some business rates have to be customized. Monthly service rates run $64.95 to $104.95. Information online at www.4seasonswireless.com/ or by calling (276) 322-2696 or (877) 49-SPEED.

  • Micrologic of Buckhannon, has six towers in north-central West Virginia with three more planned. Maximum service speed is 10 Mbs. Installation price goes from $28.35 to $50.05, depending on service plan, while service rates start at $29.95 and go up to $54.95 per month. Information online at www.3wlogic.tv/ or by calling 472-9100 or (866) 3WLOGIC.

  • Sequelle of Parkersburg has three towers in the Parkersburg-Marietta area. Its maximum speeds range from 128 Kbps to 20 Mbps. Information on installation and service costs isn’t available. For information, go to www.sequelle.net or call (877) 737-8355.
