From Broadband Wireless Online:
The WiMAX market will show gains over the next three to five years,
despite over-hyped expectations for WiMAX technology, according to a
new report from Northern Sky Research (NSR).
"Hype surrounding the eventual launch of WiMAX solutions is one of the
most significant barriers to overcome, as incumbents and service
providers will soon find out that actual WiMAX performance may not meet
early vendor claims," stated Christopher Baugh, president of NSR and
author of the report.
WiMAX system integration efforts by vendors are currently under way,
based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard for fixed applications. A mobile
version of WiMAX will be based on the 802.16e specification, which is
yet to be ratified by the IEEE’s 802.16 Working Group.
Some bumps in the road for WiMAX, according to the report, include
having a solid migration path to 802.16e, spectrum allocation,
requirements for indoor antennas and high initial costs.
The market for 802.16d solutions, which applies to fixed applications
of the technology, will be primarily located in developing regions. The
report estimates that 802.16d WiMAX technology will serve about 4.4
million subscribers by 2010.
Mobile 802.16e WiMAX technology is expected to launch in 2007,
according to the report. Approximately eight million subscribers will
use 802.16e WiMAX technology by 2010, the report predicts.
The market base for mobile WiMAX mostly will be located in developed
regions, especially with the integration of 802.16e in laptops, PDAs
and mobile phones, according to the report.
