GlobalComm 2006, which replaces SuperComm as the Telecommunications Industry Association’s (TIA’s) annual telecom supershow, runs June 4-8 at Chicago’s McCormick Place. Some 20,000 participants and more than 450 exhibitors are expected to fill some 200,000 square feet.
More than a dozen conference sessions, Speakers, Keynotes and Press Releases should keep the procedings lively.
WiMAX Strategies will showcase the biggest opportunities and most pressing issues associated with WiMAX over two days with a variety of speakers. Pioneers and innovators as well as the skeptics and naysayers, will be featured.
IP Video and IP Telephony will be featured players. Quadruple play has become a reality, thanks to IP Video with further technology development and industry growth expected.
Expect lots of Press Releases and announcements in the next few days. Some WiMAX highlights include:
- Alvarion announced its new BreezeACCESS VL 4.0 system offering carrier class triple play services in the 5GHz bands. Supporting an unparalleled 40,000 packets per second per sector and quality of service (QoS), version 4.0 is backward compatible with all previously released BreezeACCESS VL hardware. To date, more than 100,000 units of the BreezeACCESS VL have been installed in more than 100 countries worldwide, including with large carriers such as Verizon Avenue and British Telecom. It provides extended reach of more than 20 kilometers (12.5 miles), high capacity, encryption, and QoS mechanisms.
- AudioCodes, CableMatrix, Emergent Networks and VCom have joined forces to deliver a WiMAX-based VoIP platform for service providers. The companies are demonstrating the joint solution this week at GLOBALCOMM. VCom offers the 3.5GHz WiMAX access piece.
- Bermudan telecoms company North Rock Communications plans to launch a high speed wireless network based on WiMAX technology this summer. The new service, tentatively named North Rock Max, will be rolled out in a phased approach and will complement the company’s existing wireless networks on the island.
Redline will incorporate Sequans' Mobile WiMAX CPE. Redline will collaborate with Sequans to manufacture low-cost fixed, portable and mobile WiMAX devices. In addition, the two companies will perform interoperability tests and jointly participate in WiMAX plugfest events. The companies will submit products for the first wave of mobile WiMAX certification, scheduled for the end of this year.
- Alternative telco PeterStar plans to launch a WiMAX network in Kaliningrad, Russia in late 2006 or early 2007. The St. Petersburg-based operator aims to follow up the launch by extending the network to other Russian cities. Meanwhile, Russia’s Start Telecom says it plans to begin the rollout of a WiMAX wireless broadband network which will cover five cities by the end of the year.
- ZyXEL announced a WiMAX CPE and WiMAX PCMCIA Notebook card that's ready to go with the new IEEE802.16e-2005 standard. ZyXEL says it makes mobile Internet access a reality with the added benefit of guaranteed Quality of Service. Alcatel is launching their 802.16e-compatible CPE products in cooperation with Taiwan-based Zyxel.
