Amended from CommsDesign: Colorado Springs, Colo. — Aktino Inc. is applying multiple-input, multiple-output access to digital subscriber line networks, hoping to offer a new breed of symmetric copper access for business while eliminating crosstalk in copper binders. While Aktino will consider licensing its MIMO technology, it plans to offer a dedicated access system for incumbent carriers. Hamid Lalani, senior vice president of marketing and product management at Aktino, said there are several potential markets where MIMO-based DSL could play a role, such as cell-site back haul. But using the technology to extend VDSL2 could prove to be a particularly lucrative play, because many MIMO pioneers do not appear to be looking at copper media.
An orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed version of MIMO architecture has been used in wireless areas ranging from broadband access frequency bands to improved Wi-Fi access points. One founder of HDSL pioneer PairGain Technologies Inc., George Zimmerman, founded Solarflare Communications Inc. to apply MIMO to transceiver technology for 10-Gbit Ethernet over copper. |
