Amended from eMarketer:
In a new report, Wireless Broadband: The Future Around the Corner,
eMarketer sorts out the evolving universe of broadband wireless
technologies, an alphabet soup of acronyms like Wi-Fi, WiMAX, UWB and
3G/UMTS. "At this point it is impossible to predict the success of any
particular technology, because many of them have not even come to
market yet," says the author of the report, eMarketer Senior Analyst
Noah Elkin.
The
communications industry itself is hedging, he says, noting that most of
the major players are developing and promoting competing platforms.
"But most consumers of technology don't care about how their
products and services work; they simply expect them to function where,
when and how they are supposed to," says Dr. Elkin. "The ability to
roam seamlessly from a WiMAX-based office network to a Wi-Fi hotspot
and back without losing connectivity is more important to the average
user than the details that make the technology hand-offs possible."
The promise more bandwidth everywhere — in the home and office,
on the street and on the road — will create new networking
possibilities and a generally more seamless online experience. As a
result, usage is expected to grow quickly. Parks Associates projects more than 8 million subscribers worldwide by 2009.
