Certification of Wave 1 mobile WiMAX products is scheduled to begin in mid 2007, with market availability beginning in late 2007. The initial systems that will achieve WiMAX Forum Wave 1 Certification for mobile WiMAX will be based on the 2.3GHz profile.
Wave 2 adds advanced multi-antenna signal processing features such as MIMO and beamforming.
Intel’s Rosedale 2 was launched in mid-2006 and is now being incorporated into products by many WiMAX supporters. Rosedale 2 supports both fixed and mobile WiMAX along with space time coding (STC). Intel’s next WiMAX product for devices will be the single-chip radio called Ofer-R, which supports both Wi-Fi and WiMAX. It may go into laptops late this year and then into portable devices such as MP3 players and phones late next year.
WiMAX capability will remain only an option for Intel’s next-generation laptop, Santa Rosa, which is expected to arrive in March 2007 with 802.11n capability.
Also promoting Wave 2 products are Sequans, Beceem and Texas Instruments.
Samsung’s Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 products supports MIMO and Smart Antennas for 40 Mbps download and 12 Mbps upload. They demonstrated 34 Mbps down and 8 Mbps up at the 3G Congress this week. Samsung says its in-house-developed core chip for ?Mobile WiMAX Wave 2?, is attracting interest from mobile telecommunications operators and will be deployed by Sprint and other operators late this year.
Navini claims their “Wave 2″ functionality is ready to roll with beamforming and MIMO on its Ripwave MX platform.
Fujitsu and Wavesat have come out with chipsets for the often neglected 5.8GHz band.
The WiMAX Forum selected AT4 wireless (formerly known as CETECOM Spain) as its first official certification laboratory. WiMAX companies included in the WiMAX Forum-sponsored event were Accton, Adaptix, Airspan, Alcatel-Lucent, Alvarion, Aperto, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Huawei, Intel, LG, Motorola, Navini, Nokia, PicoChip, POSDATA, Redline, Redpine Signals, Runcom, Samsung, SEQUANS, SOMA Networks, Telsima, Wavesat and ZTE.
