WISPA (Wireless Internet Service Providers Association - http://www.wispa.org) is once again sending a delegation to visit both the FCC and the FTC to educate and inform both the organizations’ staff and current commissioners about the WISP business models as well as the problems and issues facing entrepreneurs trying to setup wireless ISP's using unlicensed spectrum in the US.
The WISPA team (all members of the organization) will include Tim Wolfe from WaveCrazy Communications located in Pennsylvania, George Rogato from Oregon, Forbes Mercy from Washington state and one other yet to be named person.
The number of WISP's in the US are growing on a daily basis and we are truly a force to be reckoned with. From a financial stand point, WISPs are arguably the only individuals attempting to provide broadband access to rural markets that most other large providers stay away from due to infrastructure pricing and costs. This is typically possible as WISPs can do it without spending millions of dollars with fast provisioning to service.
The issues mentioned so far and others include obtaining additional spectrum frequencies and hurricane & disaster relief efforts. These topics will be discussed on Feb. 15th 2007.
Questions and comments may be forwarded to Tim Wolfe at
