According to the International Telecommunication Union, a technology can't be called "4G" unless it offers mobile speeds in excess of 100Mbps and fixed speeds of 1Gbps. Samsung this week demonstrated what they're calling the first true 4G solution, based on their roving Wi-Bro technology. The company demonstrated the tech on a bus travelling 37 miles per hour. According to Samsung, their technology offers speeds fifty times faster that existing Wimax technology, and is capable of multicell data handovers at speeds of 100 Mbps. Daily Wireless has an excellent overview. Samsung has spent more than $100 million on their WiBro solution, and hopes to have it to market by 2010. By "to market", they mean South Korea, so don't hold your breath for U.S. deployment.
