Katie Fehrenbacher of GigOm and RCR Wireless are all over the AWS auction for week two. Of the 168 bidders who started the auction on Aug. 9th, 137 remained Friday, reports the AP.

Fehrenbacher says:

The auction, so far has brought in over $10 billion in total bids. At Round 22, and day seven, the bidding has reached a total of $10.75 billion, with the traditional wireless carriers dominating the board — T-Mobile, with $3.21 billion, Verizon Wireless, with $2.80 billion, and Cingular, with $685.75 million.

The news that the satellite consortium Wireless DBS had fallen out of the ranks was making headlines yesterday, which our intrepid readers pointed out on Tuesday, (Thanks Jesse and DG!). But the much-talked about cable group SpectrumCo is also still in the race with $1.42 billion in bids.

RCR Wireless compiled the totals so far (below).

Bidders Net total of high bids
1. T-Mobile $3.8 billion
2. Verizon Wireless $2.8 billion
3. SpectrumCo $1.5 billion
4. MetroPCS $1.2 billion
5. Cingular $661 million
6. Cricket $384 million
7. Denali Spectrum $293 million
8. Barat Wireless $208 million
9. AWS Wireless $92 million
10. Atlantic Wireless $55 million

The 1710-1755 Mhz and 2110-2155 Mhz band was identified in NTIA’s July, 2002 Viability Assessment. They identified spectrum, currently used by a dozen government agencies, that could be moved without disrupting national security. It was claimed to benefit the whole country. It will likely benefit cellular companies most with SpectrumCo, the cable/Sprint joint venture, a big exception (so far). The satellite wireless venture, teaming DirecTV and EchoStar to bid on AWS wireless frequencies, dropped out this week.
